Emma's Recording for Track

Recording the track for my music video

I had previously recorded two tracks with Annie Harmeston for my music video however with her heavy time schedule alongside mine making any adjustments was hard. The first recording that I received from Annie was wonderful, I was thrilled to hear the voice on the track alongside her beautiful acoustic guitar playing however it was too short and didn't cover the part of the music video I needed to be in it for the lip syncing previously recorded.
The second track recorded from Annie was one that I felt unsure about using due to the fact I wanted my mixed genre of pop and soft acoustic to match the melody and feel of my romantic music video. The track again was lovely although I felt that the guitar that Annie was playing over powered her voice which has a great tone and is soft enough to match my style of video I wanted to produce.
Due to this I came to the conclusion that as it was so close to the deadline and it would be difficult to get Annie to have time to record yet another track, Emma volunteered to help me out.

Emma is a drama student who is amazing at acting, she sings during her performances however doesn't just sing as a hobby or anything therefore tackling a newly learnt song from hearing it to recording it in ten minutes was extraordinary. She had the lyrics up on her phone whilst I was in the other side of the studio directing certain pitches with my fingers to help her out. I believe she did remarkable for the short time she had looked at the song then recorded it for me within.
As my main artist character is Elle, who is a female, and the cover of the original artist I am using is a male I wanted a female voice within my music song for the video for them to match. This is why I first decided to use a cover from a friend or input a friends voice.

I wouldn't of been able to do this without George Suddaby. George is a very talented musician himself and great with music tech. Having gone over to the music technology class at Wyke Sixth Form College in a state of panic without a voiceover for my track, the teacher in charge of the class partnered me up with George straight away. Voluntarily George set Emma up in the studio and took control doing an amazing job at recording a voice over of Emma onto an acoustic cover of my original track. Emma has a particular tone and was pitchy in parts of the music recording therefore George was brilliant at cutting in and out and punching in new recordings before fixing them all together for me.
George and I arranged after recording at 10am to meet at lunch time to be able to edit the track for any bumps and wrong pitches to overall get a solid, edited track together.

With the slight use of auto tune and pitch fixing George was able to produce a solid track for me that I could work with in my music video. We lowered Emmas voice so that it wasn't the main feature of the music video however was accompanying to make my music video/bonus track a more special and believable professional product.
George was a huge help and deserves full credit with recording the track for me and editing under my direction, Emma was superb and the pair of them have made my product a more relatable piece for my target audience. This is due to the fact Emma is also our age and my artists age therefore this way she wouldn't sound too mature on a record of this sort.
I am happy with my overall recording.

Once I had completed the track, George downloaded it for me to my hard drive where I was able to connect it directly to my MacBook where I edit my video and import it straight away. This was very helpful meaning I could edit and import on the move.
I added the music file onto my video and began editing straight away to make the deadline for my media music video.

Imagination Quotes

After receiving feedback from my unfinished video that is soon to be completed I found that people were still struggling to understand my concept and how the narrative is connected within the different scenes.
My adjustments that I have amended before completing my video is making the duller scene's and the scenes in colour a lot more apparent and visible to the audience. I used Final Cut Pro on my macbook to amend these changes to the work using the colour options. By dropping the exposure and saturation of the video I was able to connote the reality and the imagination better this way. I used the select tool, shortcut (A) to then click the colour board tool to be able to manipulate these. I had to use the blade tool to cut the video at the times where I believed there was a new scene that I wanted to change the colour of therefore it was a precise thing to have to do however this was due to creating the video in a different programme beforehand.

As well this I was contemplating introducing a line or two such as a quote in the beginning of the music video about imagination and its wonders. This is so that is it clear to the audience from the start that what they're about to watch has a narrative to do with the imagination, this could possibly make it clearer to my audience how the scenes are connected. I looked at http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/imagination for inspiration on quotes.

“Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's coming attractions.”
― Albert Einstein

“Reality leaves a lot to the imagination.”

“I am certain of nothing but the holiness of the Heart's affections and the truth of the Imagination.”
― John Keats

“Reality can be beaten with enough imagination.”
― Mark Twain

“Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were, but without it we go nowhere.”
― Carl Sagan

“Without leaps of imagination or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all is a form of planning.”
― Gloria Steinem

“The world of reality has its limits; the world of imagination is boundless.”
― Jean-Jacques Rousseau

I like some of these quotes all for different reasons however feel that Albert Einstein is the most appropriate to use after discussing this with fellow peers. I asked Luke Berry Dagnall another media colleague to suggest which he felt was the most appropriate to connect to my piece and agreed that is was most relevant to my storyline to use the Albert Einstein quote. I feel that this will help my audience have a better understanding of the narrative due to it being too close to the end of the deadline to refill sections of my music video.

I wanted to make my music video and the quote more meaningful to the video therefore I took this one step further and recorded a voice over to show the passion in the quote. I recorded this via garage band on my mac book pro with a vocal basic effect to add more of a whisper to the voice.

Via Garage Band on Macs you are able to record tracks from any instrument or vocal fairly clearly. I did this without a microphone due to the fact I was unable to get one. The programme is easy to use as I had never used it before until this project however it is pretty simple if you are not trying anything too complex.  The final file in my documents is shown below once recorded.

Once I had finished and exported the recording I used iMovie to drop in the quote and the voiceover to match the quote. I used the selective tool to make sure this was accurate.

This is the final quote I am going to put at the beginning of my music video.

Shooting Day 7

Equipment:
I have used the same set of equipment for the last six shooting days as well as props, this is one thing that I am continuing to do, without props, as I know my equipment is solid and works well for filming.

Plan:
Day seven consisted of ten minutes in a green room with my male actor. This was to capture the footage against the green backing to put into my previous footage, due to the fact I could not get all my talent together again at the same time at Elle's house. I wanted to try capture Jamie laid on the pillow that I previously captured in Elle's bedroom. Using green screen will mean unless I do set up lighting there will be the shadows I have to challenge and try and erase in the scene. Another thing I have to be aware of when producing the green screen I watch the light coming from the window, this is because the extra shine and sunlight if I soften my talent into the image will shine through his body. I will have to tackle this as it comes I am afraid and I can't get this shot any other way.
I also recorded a couple of shots that are seductive and also charming incase this didn't work and I could use them as if she was still dreaming of him.

As the green room was set up with equipment for a band I had to manoeuvre myself to the corner of the room so that my filming was possible. Luckily I didn't need much room anyway for my filming and Jamie was willing to lay on the floor for me to be able to do this.

This split in the room from regular to green screen allowed me to film both the original normal footage that would be back up to my green screening method if this didn't work. The lighting and soft boxes also allowed me to light jambes face well here.

Jamie being his regular outgoing self ready for filming!!
I wasn't particularly planning for Jamie to have a certain type of costume as it was just a regular image of Jamie that she was imagining therefore what he just came to college in that day was good enough for my footage.

The filming of my green screen was difficult as I had to try position Jamie from a picture I had taken, a screenshot, of the frame I needed to place him in. I got him to open his eyes and smile in a soft way to the camera. This was to make eye contact to connect directly to the audience as well my actress in her dream. I did this as it is a common convention of pop music videos, I found this also in Cher Lloyd's video - Want you back.

To begin with between the two of us we had very few idea on what we could do to be seductive and cheesy for my two second clip of Jamie. I felt if he could be a bit silly whilst filming and smiling then I could cut out a couple of seconds to put in the first section of my music video. I would only do this if I was not able to use green screen in one way or another to create my music video.

I got Jamie to put his hands through his hair followed by a seductive look to the camera with clear eye contact and a smile. I felt this would connect to the audience as well as relate to Elle in her dreams of her always wanting to be close to him or with him in a relationship.

Working with Green Screen in iMovie

Due to not being able to get into College once it his half term with a teacher I was unable to learn green screen on the editing suites. I did use the function for my preliminary two week induction task that is on the start of my blog however forgot how to use this process on the editing suites. Because of this I therefore knew if I wanted to use green screen I would have to use either a third party such as Youtube for tutorial or go into the programme I was going to use and look through the help tools for advice.
I chose to use iMovie as the programme I did the green screening on due tot he fact I tried to use Final Cut Pro however all the Youtube tutorials to help were not for the latest edition of the programme that I do have the capability or knowledge to do it on a fairly complicated programme. iMovie however was helpful in the sense that it showed full instructions through the help icon.

The help questions from Apple on iMovie really helped me understand how easy it was to be able  to create and work with on the programme. I felt this was very much achievable and thought I would try it on iMovie before switching to another programme.

The scene I had to put Jamie into was this one, you can see the relation between the green screening now as Jamie had to hold his head up as best he could as if he was to lay on the pillow on Elle's bed.
I had to first import the video of Jamie and place this above the scene in Elle's room. This was so that the videos overlay and do not collide with one another in the timeline.

After importing I then had to adjust the clip dramatically, by using the green/blue screen tool on the first tab of adjustments this automatically removes any green or blue caught in the scene. The only disappointing this about this was the fact Jamie was wearing a blue top so to colourise this it turned it purple. I had to crop the image slightly so that Jamie was positioned better on the pillow, I tried cropping the image further however this was not working when doing so as Jamie then realistically didn't look natural in the image at all and too close to the camera for the positioning of the room, the proportions therefore looks better as they are here.
I thought the video was very harsh here therefore I softened the video, the only thing about softening it, is the fact the light is then exposure through Jamie and shines as if he is see through. This is something I therefore have to fix.

The next thing for me to do in the adjustments was the stabilisation of the video. Due to me also being laid on the floor with Jamie I was very shaky with the camera in my hand. Therefore to make sure this was as stabilised as I could get it, I clicked the stabilisation box to 100% and it made the video have a lot less movement.

I adjusted the colour of Jamie to have slightly more contrast but have a lighter exposure therefore he was more natural in the scene and his skin colour was lighter, this therefore matched the scene he was placed in.

As the light was still coming through Jamie's body I tried to override this in the scene by painting a relatable colour in, this didn't work because it was still visible through his body therefore the only option I had after that was to up the opacity and unsoften the image but this didn't make him realistic. In a way I could work with this as it is a dream and the audience do need to know he isn't real and isn't there so this could work.

The final image I was fairly happy with considering the circumstances I have had to go through however there was still the shadow visible. I tried to use the clean up tools in iMovie and different settings to try remove this however every time I did either the light would shine through Jamie brightly again or I would have an image with extremely jagged edges. I did not want either. Therefore I had to prioritise in this situation on what I wanted to look more realistic.
As Elle has a window that is also in the video at the bottom of Jamie, if the sun was high it is a good possibility that there could be a shadow underneath Jamie so this may not be a problem however I am aware of it and wish I could of edited this further so it was removed softly with the guidance of a teacher.

Here you can see the rubber tool that I used to try erase the shadow from beneath Jamie.

This screenshot is showing the final effects on what the erasing looked like in the editing section. The light is visible and the edges of Jamie are frayed, this was a definite problem I could not edit further due to iMovie being a fairly simple programme.
Due to the explanation above I chose to keep the shadow so my image was not jagged and broken.
The only thing left to do was to transport this clip and copy it into the final stages of my music video. I opened the original file and event in iMovie of my video and inserted it ontop of the original. The shot had to be trimmed, cut and manipulated so that the other shots were not to shot and quick for the audience to understand what was going on. A lot of altering took place with the positioning of timings and where I put my green screening image into the original video so that my lip syncing was not off in the other sections. Once I got this in I saved and exported my video to Youtube as my final video.

Shooting Day Six - Ending of Music Video

Equipment:
I have used the same set of equipment for the last five shooting days as well as props, this is one thing that I am continuing to do, without props, as I know my equipment is solid and works well for filming.

Plan:

For the ending of my music video I wanted to capture the realisation of my actress once she had come back from her dream and imagination. The scene is cut from the imagination at the castle of the couple to the final scene where her eyes open again and she her love interest still knelt by her side handing her the papers that she dropped when they bumped into one another.
I filmed a slightly off centre over the shoulder shot of this and then went to a direct approach with a front visual of my actress with the reaction of her seeing him there. This is due to the audience seeing him walk away earlier in the video and thinking he doesn't care about her/know about her.
I then filmed the couple from Jamie's point of view taking a piece of paper out of his pocket and giving it to Elle, this also has the string on it and connects directly to the previous narrative shown in the music video.
I shot a close up of the paper in the pocket so that you could see this. I filmed other facings of this as well as Elle going to open the note. The nail varnish I used for Elle in the imagination scene was black and in the end reality scene it was red. I did this so that the passion and interest between the couple at the end is clear and red is a connotation of this feature. I had black in the previous scene due to the scene not being real, therefore it was a blank canvas for the audience to work on.
I had the note be a picture of Elle to add the connection of her drawings of him and her in the first opening scene. This was a connection I made so that people would get the narrative more clearly. The fact there is a string love heart on the image shows a twist in the narrative as he isn't supposed to like her or know who she is but then it turns out he has liked her all along!
I wanted Elle's reaction to be surprised then happy so put two different shots of emotions in here to be able to show this. I will edit these into my final music video as soon as possible.
As a natural ending I got the pair just laughing and talking in a shot showing both of them facing one another, no connection to the camera just one another, I did this and waited extra long on filming to get them acting normal instead of a forced reaction to be able to get this properly.
I took shots of the drawing as an added extra to the ending to show the different angles up close and a final zoom into an eye I could use to close the song. I felt this was appropriate as the audience are being drawn back into the drawing that seal everything and the narrative was then complete.

Music Video Draft - with end of video

After putting on the end footage of my music video I felt that I could of had a lot more footage to work with as I had a lot more time than I thought I did originally once coming to film it. I feel the ending matches the rest of the narrative and I have kept it in colour with a slight adjustment of saturation due to the fact that, Elle as the actress has come out of her imagination and he is actually there with him, just like a dream.
I feel that I could have improved my camera angles and shots a lot here as I was rushing due to having 15 minutes to film this last section with my talent and not having an available tripod that is capable of going small enough to my kneeled height. I therefore did this freehand and on some of the footage have cut out head and eyes. Although this was intentional it wasn't going to be as extreme as I have captured it.
I positioned my talent where they are in the video as a school/college corridor is not flattering at all however on the other side of the couple is a door that people use all the time and is a very busy walkway alongside a poster with all the tutors photographs on. I felt this would be difficult as well as slightly inappropriate to put in my music video even if I blurred them out. The could also draw the attention away from the couple and take attention from the audience into the colours and boldness in the poster.
I also feel I could of improved on my ending shot of the couple however I tried to make it as subtle as  possible so that it would be the first time they have spoken or met properly before and it was away from all the extreme scenes such as the prince and princess meeting that I had applied earlier.

Plan for filming last stages of video

Organisation of getting my actor and actress together via messages and social networking.

We have decided to film the last section of the video and re film some of the middle of my current video on Thursday the 20th of March at 12.40pm. This is when we all have a dinner time free although we have to make sure that we are aware of people coming in and out of the building at all times. We will need patience for this as it is a busy time period and people will want to pass where I am filming quite alot.

After texting my talents and confirming a date I then Facebook messaged them on a group message to ensure them of the clothing and accessories they were wearing in the last scene. This is very important as I can then attempt to make the scene look as similar as possible in all areas to when I last filmed therefore will will be continuity throughout. The image print screens I took were of the first draft I produced and in the hallway scene. This is where I will be finishing my video in the ending.

Thursday 20th March 2014 -
Due to my male actor not having the correct clothing with him to film I have had to move the filming and postpone until Friday the 21st at 12.40pm. Getting this part of the filming complete will give me the final half of the video and leave just the very beginning to film.

I am going to take a final photoshoot of Elle my actress at 1.40pm on the 21st of March to get some final images for my lyric booklet if I were to make one, or the inside covers. I could also use this for the actual disc design aswell.

Friday 21st March 2014 -
Jamie my actor once again forgot a piece of the clothing and due to me wanting to film a retake of one of one of the parts I had previously shot I needed that piece of clothing to keep continuity. Instead of filming I did the photoshoot of Elle Thresh in the photography studio to make sure I have sufficient work to keep up with and it wasn't a waste of an hour.
 My plan for the photoshoot:

Once I had completed the photoshoot I then needed to edit the photographs so they could possibly be used in my anciliary digi pack. As well as the photoshoot I was able to arrange with Elle to film the beginning of the video without Jamie and when I am able to get Jamie to Elle house there is only one shot that I need to fill. I made a plan before driving to Elle's house with her via car and filming the beginning of the video that night. The plan is as follows:

Shooting Day Five

Equipment:
I have used the same set of equipment for the last four shooting days as well as props, this is one thing that I am continuing to do, without props, as I know my equipment is solid and works well for filming.

Plan:

After arriving at Elle's house and setting up my Canon 500D on a tripod in her bedroom I got her to show that she was sleeping. I was aiming to get close up shots as well as a medium shot or two of the details of her from different angle to make this short few seconds not as boring as it would be if she was still and I filmed her for that long.

I feel that my Canon DSLR has made the shots look clear and clean cut due to the megapixels in which my camera holds for quality. I feel I also captured a wide variety of shots that will allow me to get a very accurate and interesting first scene of my video.

The next bit of my video I wanted to shoot was the thought of Jamie being there in her dreams and then him not being there at all. I needed to get Elle's reaction, as Lily, to Jamie her love interest being their with her and then not at all.

I wanted to get a vertical shot looking down at my actress because I felt this was dramatic and shows off her facial expression really well. I felt it had a clear mode of address doing it this way and the emotion was being communicated to my audience well.

I made sure the mise en scene was correct for example my actress was in pyjamas to match the scene and she had the same jewellery on to what she has in the further videos to make a link to her personal style and ideology.

I filmed Elle in various positions getting out of bed and turning the light on at her desk, this is the transition to the next set location in which I am filming in Elle's bedroom. This footage is my reality part of the video, therefore they will all be de-saturated so that there will be little colour in the shot and it will be bleak to the audience. I feel that filming this way in various situations but cutting out parts of the daily routine with portray my story quickly an clearly in the first section of my video. I have used different shots both close up and long to mid shots to show this.

The following videos are showing the desk footage, getting the diary out of the desk and then to read. I found this part easy however the coming footage after that filming the positioning for the diary was extremely hard.

I chose to use a slight pan and a zoom technique to get to the diary whilst showing my actress is reading it. I did this as it is a convention of my specifically chose genre and is seen in a variety of pop videos when moving to a close up of a prop. I felt these parts of the video were the most difficult to film as I had Elle infront of a mirror and wanted her reflection in the shot however tried to not get myself in the reflection. It was also a case of speed and where to walk, I felt that I had a confined space to work this never the less needed a quite vibrant and exciting shot therefore this proved difficult.

Another thing I had to focus on was literally the focusing of the camera. It was important that all the footage was in focus for this scene therefore when my camera kept shuttering I dealt with the problem that occurred by using Elle's Canon the same make and design for a shot then reverted back to my own to see if the problem had cleared. If for any reason it didn't clear I could of used Manual Focus on my Canon to make sure it was clear.

The next thing I had to watch and be aware of was shadows. Its very difficult when you have a light right behind you to capture something without a shadow and that was my problem when it came to filming. I couldn't of shot this anywhere else therefore I had to deal with the fact there was a lot of shadowing going on.

The closing of the book
I needed to make sure I had footage of my actress shutting the book, she opens her dreams through the eyes of her drawings and then closes them to have to go back to reality. Her reality is again like the other footage going to be a bleak colour with a loss of saturation. These images will close the scene and the first part of my footage. The first video is not even useable due to Elle forgetting she was looking at the camera. Using my tripod I had my camera at different heights, on tilts and using over the shoulder shots.

MEDIA MUSIC VIDEO - Draft 4
This is now my music video with the added scenes on them, however the video effects are not in place for the diary and the drawing to imagination scenes and there is missing sections. This is again still a draft however is giving me more of an idea of how the final product will come out and what it is I need to do still for my video to work and be successful. I feel that my video once everything is put together will work well and will all link. It is hard to see the narrative at this morning with missing scenes and no ending to the video therefore I feel it will come together shortly.
